3on3 FreeStyle is an online focused Street Basketball game where you can either battle online in a game of 3v3 or 1v1. It's entirely focused on this and while shallow in content, certainly does provide a competitive environment. Aside from the multiplayer aspect there are also episodes which you basically just play a match and are unlocked over time. There's a variety of characters present as well with a handful at the start and more to be purchased with in-game points that are earned through matches. These take quite awhile to get though are obtainable and can help build a colorful roster of characters to choose between.
The diverse cast of characters is vibrant and playful, each with their own b-ball attitude. The characters are each given a certain playstyle as well – such as the Point Guard, Center, and Shooting Guard. There are at least four characters for each position, so you should be able to find a player for each position that you’ll enjoy playing as. And you’ll want to play as a few different characters – just in case you are teamed up with someone who is also playing as your favourite character. Sure, your team could have two Kim’s on it, but a team works better when each player fills a different role. During a match, you’ll be able to call timeout and change characters or change them up at halftime.
Like most F2P games, the trade-off to not having the initial cost is the game design, which is built around the "grind" of playing to earn in-game credits and improve the characters. That grind is time-consuming and can be frustrating, which naturally leads many instead to pay their way to at least a place where they find the game more enjoyable.
3on3 FreeStyle has this nice fun cartoon type graphics set that still looks realistic, but has a spark to it. Each character has their own thing going on when it comes to fashion and attitude with a more artistic crazy design used for the crowds. While gameplay was smooth and solid, I did find that it was difficult to get others to cooperate online. There are options for quick speeches, but these are all positive and they needed something better for getting the word out to pass it around. Too often players would just hog the ball and lose a match by quite a bit or they'd be great at passing for better games, but that was rare. I also had lag issues with the game as not a single match didn't have a connection issue where it would go from slow motion to unplayable and that was disappointing. While it did affect every match I played, some were far better than others only showing up for a minimal amount of time.
3on3 FreeStyle isn’t a bad game. The game is simple, accessible, and has great visuals. It can be fun playing multiplayer, assuming you get paired up with some decent players and not players that want to hog all the glory. The free-to-play, pay-to-win structure really holds this game back from becoming a really great game. Gamers with boatloads of cash can substantially improve their characters for an unfair advantage, while the rest of us need to grind the hard way. I can understand microtransactions for aesthetic stuff like jerseys and celebrations – paying to improve characters is not cool at all. A single player mode would have really improved this game too.
